Opening of the green, 2008. by Alan Chambers on Saturday 26th April 2008 (Comment on this news item.)
Woodingdean Bowls club's green was officially opened of Friday the 25th of April during a visit by the Mayor of Brighton and Hove, councillor Carol Theobald. Our club was the last to be visited by the oficial party on what was a very busy day for them, their first engaement was a 9:45am and ended with the visit to Woodingdean at 4pm.
Councillor Theobald displayed some fine bowling skills during her visit, she is either a natural or had a lot of practice during her tour!
Following the opening ceremony al involved then partook of the fine hospitality laid on and special mention must go to Elaine Vickers and Joan Tomkins for their wonderful efforts on the day, they really helped show what Woodingdean Bowls club is all about, thank you ladies.
There was a drive before the mayor visited and I urge all of you now that the green is open to get out there and bowl, we've got some of the best facilities for miles around, get out there and make the most of them.
Pool Competitions by Alan Chambers on Sunday 20th April 2008 (Comment on this news item.)
Ladies & Gentlemen, I am relating this story to you from Woodingdean Bowls Club where I have just witnessed a very hard fought battle between Dave Race âThe Dragonâ coached by the Fox Joe Smith and John De-Fusard âMr Nice Guyâ over 5 frames in the FINAL of the W.B.C. Pool Competition for the âPaul Yates Challenge Shieldâ.
I can announce that John De Fusard; AKA âFuzzyâ is the winner of this, the inaugural running of what is hoped will be an annual event. John received his Gold medal and Cue plus tool-kit prize; together with the Challenge Shield from Mrs Jean Yates, who had kindly accepted a formal invitation to be the Chairmanâs Guest of Honour at the Event and to formally present the Trophy bearing her late husbands name. Mrs Yates, accompanied by her Son Graham; went on to present the runner-up, Dave Race, with the âIn-or-Over trophy, presented in memory of Tom Greenwood O.B.E. and a silver medal.
Dave Race spoke to the assembled crowd after his receipt of the runner-up trophy, having congratulated John on his win, stating that âhe had found the evening to be a complete success and that he wished to place on record a vote of thanks for the organizers; Mr Ian Prior, Mr Tony Mercer and Chairman Robert Hinton for a truly wonderful evening, with special thanks for Jean Yates for agreeing to attendâ. He went on to say â That Iâm sure that Paul is looking down; saying âI could have given either of those two a two frame lead and still have beaten themâ Those knowledgeable members present willing agreed with this sentiment and Dave left the arena accompanied by a loud round of applause from a very appreciative audience.
The evening then progressed to the game of Killer Pool, which proved to be a hard fought contest with lo and behold âFuzzyâ becoming, somewhat fittingly, the winner.
Upon being presented by Jean Yates with his prize, yet another Cue/plus tool-kit, John decided to award it to the Referee of the evening Mr âWhite Glovesâ Ian Prior; who in turn decided to confer it upon Mr Graham Yates. Graham who had played well himself within the match was delighted to receive it. Such a magnanimous gesture by Ian was extremely well received by all observing the proceedings and so the evening came to a successful conclusion with the announcement that the players within the Killer Pool had indeed raised the fantastic sum of £50 for Club Funds.
